This is the beginning of a baby blanket pattern I am developing....stitched on Brushed wool flannel...(cream ) from Geelong Blanket company.
Uses Cottage garden 'Little Cottage " Pure wool thread in
Cobblestone (Light) Dandelion Dark and Light, Buttercup dark and light , High Country Light and China doll Dark.
I will also be using some precut pure wool felt circles from Cottage garden...
Stitches used so far...Raised chain Band , Backstitch, Stem stitch.
Instructions for Raised Chain Band stitch , this is often used as a canvas stitch but can be used on any fabric. This is just a scratch drawing shall do a bettr one later or you could look for Yvette Stantons Stitches for right handed embroiderers there are excellent instructions in her book .
Using a heavy thread ..the wool or perle 5 or 8 gives a better finish.
Traditionally the stitch is worked over a series of small horizontal straight stitches ...Bars ...one under the other...
Step one is to work the Bars ...in the blanket these were about 1/4 " long...four or five of them spaced only 3mm apart..they form the little spike flowers
Bring the thread out over the top of the first bar and and then insert the needle tip under the top bar..angling to the left....only under the bar not thru the fabric....Pull the thread thru gently....The second diagram shows this....
The next step is to pass the needle under the bar only again ...this time from over the top of the bar with the thread under the needle... pulling thru and tightening slightly...the next step is to repeat the first step by passing the needle up and under the next bar...the needle does not re enter the fabric whilst working the bar.
I am using some variations I love variations! by lengthening the bars and working another set of the stitches over the bar ...but more about this soon..when the engineer can take a photo or two for you.
Very conscious of the look of my wrinkled fingers in any photo but I am getting counselling for it!!
